WhenTheGreatGatsbywaspublished,T.S.EliotpraiseditwasthefirststepofAmericannovelhadtokensinceHenryJames.Ilikethisnovel,whichisnothardtounderstandbutnoteasytoappreciate.First,itisanovelaboutdreams.Youngmen,maybeyoungwomenaswell,withoutfortuneandoutlookmaylackeverythingbutdreams.Yethowtheirdreamswillturnouttobeiscompletelyanotherthing.WenoticeinChapter9,Gatsby’sSCHEDULE,whichismarvelouslysimilartoBenjaminFranklin’sschedule,andthenweareremindedoftheAmericandream.Thatisadream,asJamesTruslowAdamshasremarked,“ofalandinwhichlifeshouldbebetterandricherandfullerforeveryone,withopportunityforeachaccordingtoabilityorachievement”(“WhatistheAmericanDream”).ThegenerationofFranklinsucceededthroughtheirpersonalstruggle.Unfortunately,thiswasnevertruetomenlikeGatsby,wholivedinthe1920sAmerica.Gatsbydoeshaveambition,butheisaheroinanimpropertimewheremoneyisthesolecriterionofsuccess.FitzgeraldlinksGatsby“withaworldthatnolongerexist,aworldthathasbeenlostinbackrushoftime,aworldthatoffersmoreinpromisethanhasbeenrealizedinfact”(Lehan).Itisthedreamthatdeceiveshimintolivingwithsufferings;anditisthedreamthatevenmakeshimdiewillingly.
